I am a Virginia snob, and a long-time lover of McClelland's small-batch special releases. The nic-hit is in the center of mild to medium. We've just received a very limited supply of Cornell & Diehl's Small Batch Carolina Red Flake tins. It burns nicely, is medium in temperature, and doesn't bite me. Burns cool and clean with no harshness or tongue bite. It is rich, medium body, and a little sweet with a slight tanginess (but not in a citrus way). After the charring light, I tamped it again and lit up for real. The flavor and aroma becomes much more pronouncedthe Perique notes are more prominent and the Carolina Red Flake mellows the experience out. Only issue is that I did not buy enough! All the Small Batch with CRF up to the one with perique were all super disappointing for me. Some are saying use a small pipe. The lead note is something I have no was of identifying accurately, but it is a special thing. Got my tins today and after 15 minute dry time I fired it up. Very nice red VA flake. Tin Note - The traditional Virginia sweetness of hay hits you right away and does not end. Nicotine: not heavy. It doesn't bite & offers a relatively sweet, pure, Old Belt Carolina Red VA flavor. But these small batch blends have all been outstanding and CRF is another great one in this series. It comes across in the nose, a bready, earthy, simple dried plant essence, but instead of dominating the tobacco, it's a top note to a composed, gentle, and fresh red Virginia. This does not have heavy tangy/sour smell of something like 515 RC-1 (missed 5100), it is more muted and earthy. a bit of sour and hay. My thanks to the farmers that grew it and to Jeremys hard working staff for prepping it into a very nice flake. It is unique as Red Virginia's go very little bite, cool burning, nice complex earthy flavor, with a little something "floral" on the retrohale. This looks like a great VA and should age well. The taste is all Virginia to me but with some heft and body to it. We're proud of our heritageand we're particularly proud of this damn near perfect red Virginia flake. There is no dust and no excessive moisture. a flake cut is advertised, in my tin I found a broken flake, probably due to the transfer of the tobacco. It never disappoints. Nic is also around medium. C&D I salute you! it is close to that fresh out the tin. There are several fruity nuances that run together making a kind of "fruit punch" flavor that's only mildly sweet and somewhat tart. Since that time I've only smoked about 4 bowls from the tin..BUT NOW this is a far more robust red Virginia than I notice in other C&D blends, this one is very complex and has a certain amount of a nose and mouth tinglethe good kind..later down the bowl,it takes on a more bready essence,yet the sour and tangy still lingers..it is a good smoke for more experienced pipers..nic hit is mediumI recommend this one for pipers who wish to explore the true nature of VA tobaccos and how varied they tend to behave.
